Box Office Predictions – Weekend of Feb 3

Most Americans associate this weekend with the Super Bowl, not the movie theater, but this has historically been a decent frame to release two types of films: teen horror (The Roommate, The Messengers, When a Stranger Calls) and women’s counterprogramming (Dear John, Because I Said So). CBS Films hopes they’ve combined both into one with The Woman in Black, a ghost story that happens to star a female favorite, Harry Potter‘s Daniel Radcliffe… [Read more]

Box Office Predictions – Weekend of Jan 27

It’s that time of the week again, and I have box office predictions at the ready for the three films opening in wide release today. This weekend brings Liam Neeson battling wolves, Katherine Heigl bounty hunting, and Sam Worthington threatening to jump off a ledge – yep, it’s still January, all right. Additionally, because the Oscar nominations were released on Tuesday, you can expect some healthy jumps from those films that made the cut. Without further ado… [Read more]

Box Office Predictions – Weekend of Jan 20

Hello, readers – it’s once again time to play the weekly box office predictions game. Apologies for my unannounced absence last Thursday – a run-in with what I can only presume to be some of the worst food-poisoning man has ever experienced left me bedridden for nearly five days. But I’m back, baby, and ready to haphazardly throw around numbers as usual… [Read more]

Box Office Predictions – Weekend of Jan 6

After a four month hiatus, during which time I completed college, I am back at the box office predictions game. Miss me? Like it or not, here is my take on the coming weekend… The big movie opening this weekend is Paramount’s camcorder exorcism horror film, The Devil Inside. The obvious comparison would be Lionsgate’s very similar The Last Exorcism, which did resoundingly well back in August 2010, with $20.4 million opening weekend… [Read more]

A Short Hiatus from Box Office Predictions

Folks — I just wanted to let you know that my weekly box office predictions column has not disappeared forever. It’s just a real time-sucker and, as I plow through the first month of my last semester of college, I have decided to temporarily drop it to make sure that when I do write for Bucket Reviews, I’m writing an actual review. Expect the column to return on a regular basis in mid-October. Until then, please enjoy the reviews.

Box Office Predictions – Weekend of Aug 19

Welcome back to my weekly box office predictions column, Dog Days of August edition. This weekend we have four wide releases, which all could have been June or July movies had things gone better for them at some stage of their respective productions. With Conan the Barbarian, Spy Kids 4, and One Day, one presumes the studios’ August dump-jobs are a result of poor quality (in fact, I know this is true in the case of the latter–review coming later today). Fright Night is… [Read more]

Box Office Predictions – Weekend of Aug 12

Welcome back to my weekly box office predictions column, where is the wake of getting Rise of the Planet of the Apes dead-on and The Change-Up way off last week, I’m hoping to score better than a marginal 50-50 this weekend. I have to run to a screening in 45 minutes, so let’s get right into the action… [Read more]

Box Office Predictions – Weekend of Aug 5

After two weeks of publishing an abridged version of this column due to the craze of Comic-Con, I’m back with the full spiel. Good thing, too, because the predictions on this weekend’s big opener and unexpected critical darling, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, are all over the map, so making a substantiated guess is a must. The hard-R rated The Change-Up also comes out and, despite some low industry tracking estimates, I think there is still hope yet for the Jason Bateman… [Read more]

Quickie Box Office Predictions – Weekend of July 29

Last weekend, I skipped the usual detailed analysis of the openers’ box office prospects because I was covering Comic-Con. This weekend, I’m going to do the same because I’m still recovering from Comic-Con… meaning I’m backed up with regular reviews in the queue to write for you guys, and I’d hate for this column to interfere with those being posted in a timely manner. But as always, I’m posting the chart of my guesses, complete with new openers… [Read more]

Quickie Box Office Predictions – Weekend of July 22

I’m currently inundated with all things Comic-Con–check out my live coverage here–so I’m forgoing the usual detailed analysis with box office comparisons. But I’ll chime in with my usual prediction of the weekly numbers, as Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger and the Justin Timberlake/Mila Kunis rom-com Friends with Benefits arrive in theaters… [Read more]
